Sitz Bath and Hemorrhoids – 8 Steps in Making This Treatment for Hemorrhoids Work

There is one great relationship between sitz bath and hemorrhoids. As we all know, hemorrhoids can be treated using natural methods, surgical means or non-surgical strategies. But, one of the known non-drug treatments for this condition is sitz bath.

Sitz bath involves sitting in warm water for a short period of time. The warm water pushes the blood flow in the rectal area and thus, it promotes healing and eases discomfort. Sitz bath is also believed to bring relaxation to the anal sphincter. Hydrotherapy or water therapy is incorporated in the sitz bath.

Steps in Making a Hemorrhoid Sitz Bath

This treatment is easy to perform and it only takes 15 to 20 minutes. All needed materials are sitz bath, warm water, reading material and a clean cotton towel. One has only to do the following:

  1. Purchase a sitz bath – The sitz bath is a plastic bowl that is put on top of the toilet seat. This plastic bowl is available at local drug stores or medical supply stores. It has unique patterns which pushes overflowing water back to the toilet bowl. Many of these plastic bowls have the ability to continuously add warm water to the bath. These cost about ten to fifteen dollars. Conversely, there are other available systems that provide an option of hooking up to the faucet or a solution bag. But these are said to be more expensive.
  1. Gather reading materials – Having something to read is advisable during the treatment. Sitting alone for some time is quite unexciting. While sitting, one can do something that can occupy the mind. Crossword puzzles can do.
  1. Fill the sitz bath with warm water – Make sure that the water is not so hot that it burns your skin but warm enough and not so uncomfortable. The volume of the water must be enough to cover the buttocks and hips.
  1. Place the sitz bath on top of the toilet seat – Make sure that the plastic bowl is placed in line with the toilet seat.
  1. Sit comfortably – Try to be stable while sitting on the sitz bath for about 15 to 20 minutes depending on the doctor’s recommendation. Sometimes, the water is needed to be refilled in order to keep a helpful warm temperature.
  1. Get up slowly when finished – There are times that after the treatment, the person feels dizzy. The dilation of blood vessels brought by the warm water rarely results to this condition.
  1. Carefully dry up the part – As much as possible, the rectal area is left to be air dry. A clean cotton towel can also be used to dry up the part. The towel must be pat on the area to dry, not rubbed.
  1. Repeat the treatment once or twice a day.

It is possible to do the treatment in a regular bathtub, but it would not be as comfortable as a sitz bath in a sitz bathtub.  In a regular bathtub, one would either need to keep his feet over the side of the tub or put it in the water, while the knees are bent. This may not be quite as hygienic as it is in a sitz bathtub.

Sitz bath and hemorrhoids have established a great relationship with each other. Just by following the steps mentioned above, everything will be worth it. The process may require some effort on your part but just the same the end of the process is the most fulfilling part. So if you are looking for one natural treatment for hemorrhoids, the sitz bath is always one great option to consider.
